Powerful & Lightweight Ultra Portables Under 1.2kg: pulling its weight at less than 2.6 pounds
Ultraportable that are super light and ultra slim, yet powerful are made possible with Intel’s 11th generation processors. Together, with other energy efficient components (integrated GPU, WiFi and super fast connectivity) they carry the Intel Evo badge. We look at 8 of the best powerful and light laptops weighing less under 1.2kg.
Manufacturers have been jumping on the Intel Evo platform wagon by introducing their own take on the premium ultraportable bearing the badge. These powerful and lightweight laptops also have one main task at hand, to ensure that its battery can last more than 9 hours on a charge. And, manufacturers delivered with battery life reaching over 20 hours. You don’t just get a light and slim laptop but one that powers you through the day (and night).
Intel Core i5 versus Intel Core i7: Which processor to go for?
Among the 11th generation Intel mobile processors in use among our thinnest and lightest laptops are the following processors:
- Intel® Core™ i7-1185G7 Processor
- Intel® Core™ i7-1165G7 Processor
- Intel® Core™ i5-1135G7 Processor
When looking at the CPU performance alone, based on Average CPU Mark scores by PassMark Software at the time of writing, here is how each of those processors scores.
Mobile Processor | Base | Turbo | Ave CPU | Single Thread |
Intel® Core™ i7-1185G7 | 3 | 4.8 | 10979 | 2906 |
Intel® Core™ i7-1165G7 | 2.8 | 4.7 | 10647 | 2886 |
Intel® Core™ i5-1135G7 | 2.4 | 4.2 | 10182 | 2733 |
Apart from the Microsoft Surface Pro 8 that uses Intel® Core™ i7-1185G7 processor, the other laptops are offered with a choice of Intel Core i7-1165G7 or Intel Core i5-1165G7. So the real question is, which of these two processors to go for? And, how much of a performance gain do you get going for the more expensive Intel Core i7 over the Intel Core i5?
Taking the Intel Core i5-1135G7 as baseline, the Intel Core i7-1165G7 is just 4.6% faster in the Average CPU Mark score and 5.6% faster in Single Thread performance. There isn’t a lot to gain unless you pick the Surface Pro 8 with Intel Core i7-1185G7. This edges slightly higher with a gain of 7.8% and 6.3% respectively compared to our baseline. These again are not great jumps in performance so depending on your budget, you might want to give the Intel Core i7 option a miss.
