Affordable 5G Smartphones Bigger Than 6-inch: Best budget handsets big display & flagship features
More 5G ready handsets are gracing the smartphone scene and we are seeing manufacturers coming up with affordable alternatives to their flagship offerings. These handsets cost less than their flagship siblings. Yet, they are still very capable and feature-rich, which makes you wonder why you are paying over the top for flagship smartphones.
Manufacturers Undercutting Their Own Flagships
Samsung has the Galaxy S20 FE (Fan Edition) as an alternative to their flagship handsets in the S-series, the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra. Apple has iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 as alternatives to their flagship handsets, the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. But these are still expensive handsets costing 700 dollars or more.
Further down in price are handsets from super competitive manufacturers like OnePlus. It too has the Nord series as an alternative to the flagship OnePlus series. While Oppo, Huawei and Xiaomi each offers ‘Lite‘ editions of their high-end offering. It just goes to show how fierce the smartphone market is that manufacturers are willing to undercut their own flagship offerings.

Powerful Processors
While these smartphones may not come with the fastest processors with the exception of OnePlus 8T and Xiaomi Mi 10T 5G phones, they are powered by mid-tier or upper middle tier processors. For example, the current flagship processor from Qualcomm is the Snapdragon 865+ 5G and Snapdragon 865. These are followed by the Snapdragon 768G 5G and Snapdragon 765G 5G mobile platforms.
The affordable 5G-ready smartphones in our line-up are based on the mid-tier and upper middle tier processors. Naturally, you want a smartphone with the latest generation chip. As an example, pick one powered by Snapdragon 765G over Snapdragon 750G if your budget permits. Top 15 Best Affordable 5G Smartphones Bigger Than 6-inch
For around half the cost of today’s flagship smartphones, around the 500 dollar mark, here are the best smartphones you can buy right now. We highlighted the key specifications, especially the processor allowing you to place the phone in order of its performance based on our list above Snapdragon processors above.
1. OnePlus 8T 8GB RAM 6.55-inch 5G 128GB
- Processor: Snapdragon 865 with 5G
- Display: 6.55-inch AMOLED FHD+ 120Hz
- Memory & Storage: 8GB RAM, 128GB
- Battery: 4500mAh with 65W quick charge
The OnePlus 8T is the new mid-life upgrade for the OnePlus 8. It is at the top end of our budget and is powered by Snapdragon 865 with 5G chip. This is the same chip powering OnePlus 8, Samsung Galaxy S20 smartphones, including the Galaxy S20 FE. It is in effect the company’s flagship handset, not even the alternative Nord series (also listed below). It will cost you more but not as much as its equal from Samsung, Apple or even Huawei.
The OnePlus 8T supports super quick, reaching a full charge in 37 minutes with 65W charger. It also comes with a higher capacity battery at 4500mAh. Beyond that, not much has changed from the OnePlus 8. A couple of noteworthy mention are the screen and camera setup.
The display is a 6.55-inch AMOLED panel with quick 120Hz refresh rate but maintains the in-display fingerprint scanner, 2400 x 1080 pixels and 402 ppi pixel density. Turn the phone over and you will notice that the cluster of cameras has moved. Instead of being aligned in the center, it is now on the top left corner.
Within this cluster of cameras, the Macro Lens now comes with a higher resolution sensor at 5MP (vs 2MP), the Ultra Wide Angle Lens with 16MP sensor has a bigger field of view at 123° vs 116° and there is a new 2MP monochrome lens. Apart from that, the main rear camera is still based on the same 48MP Sony sensor. If you have an earlier OnePlus handset, skip the OnePlus 8 and go for this, the OnePlus 8T.
2. Oppo Reno4 5G 8GB RAM 6.4-inch 5G 128GB
- Processor: Snapdragon 765G with 5G
- Display: 6.43-inch AMOLED FHD+
- Memory & Storage: 8GB RAM, 128GB
- Battery: 4000mAh with 65W quick charge
Next we have the Oppo Reno 4 5G. The phone is powered by Snapdragon 765G processor with 5G connectivity. It also supports 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 to quick charging the 4000mAh battery fully in 36 minutes. Up front you get a 6.4-inch AMOLED display at 2400 x 1080 pixel resolution with 2.5D contours.
As for the cameras, there is a 32MP Dual Selfie camera and a triple LDAF camera setup for the main shooter. That LDAF camera triple camera is made up of 48MP main camera, 8MP ultra wide camera and 2MP monochrome camera. These support live HDR that when enabled adjusts the exposure, dark or brightness as you capture your video. Other camera features including Ultra Nigh Video Algorithm for low light performance and Ultra Steady Video 3.0 for enhanced stabilisation. For video enthusiasts, the phone comes preloaded with a pro-level video editing app for template, music and clips.
3. Huawei P40 Lite 5G 6GB RAM 6.5-inch 5G 128GB
- Processor: Kirin 820
- Display: 6.5-inch LCD
- Memory & Storage: 6GB RAM, 128GB
- Battery: 4000mAh with 40W quick charge
If you are looking to save even more money, pick up the Huawei P40 Lite 5G. The handset not only supports ultra fast 5G connectivity but comes with a healthy 6GB RAM memory and spacious 128GB storage. At the heart of the phone is Huawei’s own silicon, the Kirin 820. This is again a mid-tier processor. The fastest processors currently being those from the Kirin 900 series. The Huawei P40 Pro+ for instance is powered by Kirin 990 5G.
To keep cost down, the handset uses a 6.5-inch LCD panel at 2400 x 1080 pixel resolution. The single front selfie camera is housed in a cut-out on the top left corner of the display with a 16MP sensor. As for the rear main shooter, it uses an impressive four camera setup with a 64MP main camera, 8MP ultra wide camera, 2MP bokeh lens and 2MP macro lens. Together it supports phase focus, contrast focus and AIS (AI Image Stabilisation).
When you run low on juice, charge the phone using Huawei SuperCharge 40W adapter (optional) to top up the 4000mAh battery via the USB Type-C connector.
4. OnePlus Nord 8GB RAM 6.44-inch 5G 128GB
- Processor: Snapdragon 765G with 5G
- Display: 6.44-inch AMOLED FHD+ 90Hz HDR10+
- Memory & Storage: 8GB RAM, 128GB
- Battery: 4115mAh with 30T quick charge
Keeping the price low again we have the OnePlus Nord handset with flagship level cameras with nighscape support and dual selfie front cameras. Powerd by Snapdragon 765G processor and 5G ready, it both quick and future proof. That 6.44-inch AMOLED display may not be 120Hz quick but can go up to 90Hz refresh rate. Quick charging with Warp Charge 30T is also supported, while not as fast as 65Watt charging is still good topping up to 70% in an hour.
As for the flagship level shooters, you get four rear cameras and two front cameras. On the back, the camera group is smaller than OnePlus 8T but you get a 48MP primary sensor with OIS, 8MP ultra wide angle sensor, 5MP depth sensor and 2MP macro sensor. That 48MP primary sensor is shared with OnePlus 8T. For the rest, the OnePlus 8T uses 16MP ultra wide sensor, 5MP macro sensor and 2MP monochrome sensor.
Night shots are enhanced by taking up to 9 different photos at varying exposures and stitching them together for a clearer and brighter photo in low light. Flip over the phone and the two selfie cameras are made up of an 8MP ultra wide-angle lens with 105 degree field of view and a main 32MP Sony sensor to enable you to capture even more including 4K 60fps videos.
5. Samsung Galaxy A51 5G 6GB RAM 6.5-inch 5G 128GB
- Processor: Exynos 980 8nm processor
- Display: 6.5-inch AMOLED FHD+
- Memory & Storage: 6GB RAM, 128GB
- Battery: 4500mAh with 15W quick charge
The Samsung A series smartphones cater to mid-range and budget conscious users with focus on large screen, long-lasting battery life and high resolution cameras. The Samsung Galaxy A51 is the first handset in the series to receive a 5G modem with the Galaxy A90 5G being the other phone in the series. Powered by Samsung’s own Exynos 980 8nm processor with a clock speed of up to 2.2GHz, the phone is sufficiently quick.
The biggest draw, apart from its affordable price tag is the big display. It has a big 6.5-inch AMOLED wide-screen display at FHD+ resolution (2400 x 1080 pixels) with a small cutout for the front facing camera. There is also an on-screen fingerprint scanner for quick unlocking. Around the back, the phone has a two-tone design with shimmering holographic finish.
The main rear camera is made up of four sensors and is capable of taking brilliant photos, including close ups. There is the 48MP main camera, 12MP ultra wide camera 123 degree FoV, 5MP macro camera for close-ups and 5MP depth camera for live focus and bokeh effects. Together the cameras can shoot super steady 4K resolution video. As for the selfie camera inside that cut-out, this is again a high resolution 32MP camera capable of Live Focus and high-resolution images.
As for the battery life, there is enough juice in the 4500mAh to last up to 2 days with normal use, but you only get a 15W fast charger.
6. Realme x50 5G 8GB RAM 6.57-inch 5G 128GB
- Processor: Snapdragon 765G with 5G
- Display: 6.57-inch LCD FHD+ 120Hz
- Memory & Storage: 8GB RAM, 128GB
- Battery: 4200mAh with 30W quick charge
Even cheaper than the Nord is the Realme x50 5G. The phone is powered by the same chip used on the Nord, the Snapdragon 765G with 5G. This makes it a direct competitor to the OnePlus Nord and Oppo Reno4 5G above, making it a true money saving option. Even with 5G and strong gaming and everyday use performance, it still manages to squeeze a 120Hz high refresh rate 6.57-inch LCD FHD+ (2400 x 1080) full screen display. That is flagship territory, double the refresh rate of standard 60Hz panels. With a 30W Dart Charge, the handset will be fully charged in just 55 minutes.
The quad camera setup for the rear puts a 48MP main camera with a 119 degree ultra wide 8MP camera, a monochrome camera and a 2MP macro camera. The dual front shooter sits in the cut-out on the display. These are 16MP main sensor and 2MP portrait lens for selfies with bokeh, HDR and beautification support. It even supports 1080p slow motion video capture at 120fps. Finally, a fingerprint sensor is built into the power button for easy reach and quick unlocking.
7. Xiaomi Mi 10T Lite 5G 6GB RAM 6.67-inch 5G 128GB
- Processor: Snapdragon 760G with 5G
- Display: 6.57-inch LCD FHD+ 120Hz HDR10
- Memory & Storage: 6GB RAM, 128GB
- Battery: 4820mAh with 33W quick charge
Moving on, we have the Mi 10T Lite 5G. This is easily one of the cheapest smartphone with 5G connectivity in the market right now. That is because it is based on the previous generation 8nm Snapdragon 750G processor. If you are truly strapped for cash but still want a 5G handset, this is one to go for. Together with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage, it is a flagship-level 5G ready device with a bargain basement price tag. The big 6.67-inch LCD display is only second to 6.7-inch in terms of size and with FHD+ resolution and 120Hz AdativeSync refresh rate, it is ultra smooth when it needs to be.
It even comes with a 64MP main shooter, 8MP ultra wide camera (120 degree FoV), 2MP macro camera and 2MP depth sensor grouped in a 2 x 2 grid and housed in a circular ring on the back of the phone. Around the front, you get a 16MP selfie camera in the small cut-out on the display to take stunning portraits. A few outstanding camera features to take mobile photography to the next level include long exposure, timed burst with up to 600 photos per minute, dual perspective front and back recording, and time-lapse selfie.
Finally, for charging, the 33W fast charging adapter brings the high capacity 4820mAh battery back to full again in just under an hour, or 59 minutes to be precise. Also, on a full charge, the phone will last for up to a day on heavy use and on normal use, hovering around 40% at the end of a full day.
8. Oppo Find X2 Neo 12GB RAM 6.5-inch 5G 256GB
- Processor: Snapdragon 765G with 5G
- Display: 6.5-inch OLED FHD+ 90Hz
- Memory & Storage: 12GB RAM, 256GB
- Battery: 4025mAh with 30W quick charge
Moving back up again on the price ladder is this flagship alternative from Oppo, the Oppo Find X2 Neo has a bigger 6.5-inch OLED display FHD+ resolution with curved edges, 1100 nits peak brightness, DCI-P3 wide colour gamut and up to 90Hz refresh rate. It even has an ultra-thin on-screen fingerprint scanner.
It is more expensive than both the Oppo Reno4 5G above and the Oppo Find X2 Lite below. It stands out from the rest with a huge 12GB RAM and even bigger 256GB storage. The other Oppo phones here have half the memory at 6GB RAM and half the storage at 128GB. For processing power, it is powered by the smartphone manufacturers’ favourite, the Snapdragon 765G with 5G support.
For optics, it gets quad camera with 5x hybrid optical zoom using 48MP main camera with OIS, 13MP telephoto lens, 8MP wide-angle lens and 2MP monochrome lens. Go from Ultra wide to main to telephoto for real optical zoom. Night scape photography are also improved with the help of AI algorithm.
For charging, the phone supports VOOC4 with 30W charging power to bring the 4025mAh battery up from 3% to 50% in 20 minutes. If you need more storage for files, more memory for multitasking and like the curved OLED display, the Oppo Find X2 Neo 5G is your choice.
9. Huawei P40 8GB RAM 6.1-inch 5G 128GB
- Processor: Kirin 990 5G
- Display: 6.1-inch OLED FHD+
- Memory & Storage: 8GB RAM, 128GB
- Battery: 3800mAh with 22.5W quick charge
The Huawei P40 flagship is almost double the price of the Huawei P40 Lite 5G above. This is because it is powered by the flagship Kirin 990 5G processor wrapped in a IP53 splash resistant body with cool stainless steel frame. We prioritise the Lite version above over this purely on price. This is after all a budget line-up. Still, the smartphone now cost under 600 dollars, is 5G ready and comes with a 6.1-inch display which ticks all the boxes.
The display may be on the small side at 6.1-inch but the OLED panel at 2340 x 1200 pixel is sharp with 431ppi pixel density. On top of that, the triple camera primary shooter designed in partnership with Leica takes amazing photos and video any time of the day. It is made up of a 50MP Ultra Vision sensor, a 16MP ultra wide angle camera with 2.5cm macro shot with third and last camera being an 8MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. Together, the cameras offer up to 5x hybrid zoom and 30x max digital zoom. The front selfie camera on the other hand uses a 32MP sensor.
For power, the onboard 3800mAh battery is enough for a full day’s use with support for quick charging using 22.5W SuperCharge technology.
10. Oppo Find X2 Lite 8GB RAM 6.4-inch 5G 128GB
- Processor: Snapdragon 765G
- Display: 6.4-inch OLED FHD+
- Memory & Storage: 8GB RAM, 128GB
- Battery: 4025mAh with 30W quick charge
Around the same price as the Huawei P40 Lite 5G, Samsung Galaxy A51 5G and the OnePlus Nord is this next entry, the Oppo Find X2 Lite. Another ‘Lite’ version of the company’s flagship, this handset also uses Snapdragon 765G with support for 5G. There is a slight advantage with this handset in that it has a bigger 8GB RAM over those with 6GB RAM while the storage stays at 128GB.
Up front, you get a 6.4-inch OLED panel full display with FHD+ resolution, hidden fingerprint sensor and a dewdrop to house the 32MP selfie camera. For the cameras, it loses the telephoto sensor but retains the 48MP main camera and 8MP wide-angle camera. The other two cameras focuses on taking beautiful portrait with a 2MP portrait style mono lens and a 2MP portrait style retro lens. The main camera copes really well in the dark with Ultra Night Mode and NPU AI noise reduction while the wide-angle lens also doubles as macro lens for wide and close-up shots.
It also supports 30W VOOC Flash Charge 4.0 to quickly charge the 4025mAh capacity battery from 3% to 50% in just 20 minutes. Sounds familiar? That is because the Oppo Find X2 Neo above uses the same battery, technology and processor. What this means is that if you are willing to forgo the big curved display and some top end features and save some money in the process, the Lite version is for you.
11. Xiaomi Mi 10T 5G 6GB RAM 6.67-inch 5G 128GB
- Processor: Snapdragon 865 with 5G
- Display: 6.67-inch LCD FHD+ 144Hz DCI-P3
- Memory & Storage: 8GB RAM, 128GB
- Battery: 5000mAh with 33W quick charge
Pushing up the price again is this flagship from Xiaomi. We have seen the cheaper Lite edition above, now meet the ‘full fat’ version. Coincidentally, it is also quite ‘fat’ measuring 9.33mm thick. This is one of two flagship phones, the other being the Mi 10T Pro. Powered by Snapdragon 865 with 5G it is in the same league as OnePlus 8T above while managing to keep its price lower than the OnePlus 8T. It also has a huge 5000 mAh battery and supports 33W fast charging for a fully charged battery in 50 minutes.
But that is not all, the huge 6.67-inch FullHD+ LCD display, second only to 6.7-inch displays in size on our list, supports 144Hz AdaptiveSync refresh rate and DCI-P3 wide colour gamut. Other flagship goodies include a huge 64MP main camera. Opt for the Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro and get a 108MP sensor instead. The other cameras in the cluster is the 13MP ultra wide-angle camera with up to 123 degree FoV and 5MP macro camera with 2cm auto focus. Pro-level camera functions include 8K movie capture, 33MP photos from 8K video and long exposure mode. As for the selfie camera in the pinhole on the display, it uses a 20MP sensor with 4-in-1 Super Pixel for clarity.
12. Motorola G 5G Plus 4GB RAM 6.7-inch 5G 64GB
- Processor: Snapdragon 765
- Display: 6.7-inch LCD FHD+ 90Hz HDR10
- Memory & Storage: 4GB RAM, 64GB
- Battery: 5000mAh with 20W quick charge
Throwing down the gauntlet on the barrage of cheap phone is Motorola’s entry simply known as Motorola G 5G Plus. A mouth full of a name but so is most of the budget phones in our list. But the unique selling points for us apart from the low price tag and fast speed 5G connectivity is the 48MP quad camera system and long 2 days battery life. Powered by Snapdragon 765 it is just as good as most phones here in terms of performance. Throw in the huge 6.7-inch FullHD+ LCD display, 5000mAh high capacity battery, 20W TurboPower quick charging and Android 10 without a clunky custom skin and you have a total crowd pleaser especially the bargain hunters.
13. Oppo Reno4 Z 8GB RAM 6.57-inch 5G 128GB
- Processor: MediaTec MT6873V
- Display: 6.57-inch LCD FHD+ 120Hz
- Memory & Storage: 8GB RAM, 128GB
- Battery: 4000mAh with 18W quick charge
The Oppo Reno4 Z 5G is the budget alternative to the Reno4 above. It uses a slower MediaTec MT6873V processor, favoured by budget handset makers. This is paired with 8GB RAM memory and a good size 128GB storage. The 6.57-inch FullHD+ LCD display (2400 x 1080) supports 120Hz refresh rate and dual selfie camera setup. If you turn the phone around, you will find a cluster of 4 camera sensors arranged in a 2 x 2 grid with the LED flash in the middle much like number 5 on a dice.
For the quad camera setup, there is a 48MP main camera with 4-in-1 pixel binning to capture more light, 8MP ultra wide lens capable of 119 degree FoV, 2MP black and white monochrome portrait lens and 2MP vintage portrait lens. For the front you get a 16MP main sensor and a 2MP depth of field secondary lens. Finally, to power all that, it comes with a 4000mAh battery with support for 18W Fast Charging.
14. Motorola Edge 5G 6GB RAM 6.7-inch 5G 128GB
- Processor: Snapdragon 765
- Display: 6.7-inch OLED FHD+ 90Hz DCI-P3 HDR10+
- Memory & Storage: 6GB RAM, 128GB
- Battery: 4500mAh with 15W quick charge
From the Edge series comes the Motorola Edge 5G. As you may have already guessed, this is a phone with curved edge display and a big one at that. The expansive display measures 6.7-inch, the biggest in our list of affordable and capable smartphones. Only one other phone shares this display size albeit a flat one rather than curved, and that is also from Motorola, see Motorola G 5G Plus above. Of course this is a cut above the other phone in that it costs nearly double that of the G 5G Plus.
With 6GB RAM memory and 128GB storage, the handset is powered by Snapdragon 765 chip with 5G modem. That 6.7-inch curved OLED display has FHD+ (2340 x 1080) and is capable of 90Hz refresh rate, DCI-P3 colour gamut and HDR10+. And if that is not enough, it features a pair of powerful stereo speakers, tuned by award-winning Waves, music to our ears.
As for the shooters, it relies on a 64MP sensor with Quad Pixel for better low light shots. Then there is the 16MP ultra wide sensor with up to 4x more in the frame (FoV 117°) and 5x closer with macro vision, 2x high resolution optical zoom with 8MP telephoto and a time-of-flight sensor. As for the front, you get a 25MP Quad Pixel sensor perfect for selfie and Full HD 30fps video capture. Even with all these features, the phone’s battery promises up to two days battery life using a 4500mAh capacity battery which you can charge up with 15W TurboPower charger.
BONUS: OnePlus 8 8GB RAM 6.55-inch 5G 128GB
- Processor: Snapdragon 865 with 5G
- Display: 6.55-inch AMOLED FHD+ 90Hz HDR10+
- Memory & Storage: 4GB RAM, 128GB
- Battery: 4300mAh with 30T quick charge
The original OnePlus 8 is not very different from the new OnePlus 8T on the top of our list above. Powered by the same Snapdragon 865 with 5G chip, it has a slim and sleek profile with curved display. This can be seen as an advantage over the OnePlus 8T that favours instead a flat display. In performance terms, the 6.55-inch curved AMOLED display is capable of 90Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ support. Not as smooth as the 120Hz refresh rate on 8T but a small price to pay for a curved display.
For power, it has a 4300mAh battery pack for a full days’s use with Warp Charge 30T support. Recharge to 50% in 22 minutes. That is again slower than Warp Charge 65 on the 8T but still quick. As for the optics, the 48MP Triple Camera system is not very different from that on the 8T. The only sensor missing is the monochrome lens from the 8T’s quad camera setup. It still has the same 48MP main camera, 16MP ultra wide angle camera and the 2Mp macro lens. But, just like the 8T, there is no telephoto lense, only 2x in sensor zoom. Turn over, and you get the same 16MP selfie camera with Electronic Image Stabilisation for crispier and cleaner video and photos.
