AMD Ryzen 7 3000 & 4000 series Performance Comparison

Based on commonly used AMD Ryzen 7 processors above, here is how they compare in relation to one another. Note that we included the custom-built AMD Ryzen 7 3780U available exclusively to Microsoft Surface Laptop business edition for reference.

As for the 4000 series, at the point of writing, only one processor option is available, the AMD Ryzen 7 4800H. As you can see from the table and bar graph below, the octa-core AMD Ryzen 7 4800H is one to aim for given its jump in performance from gaining 4 extra cores.

The AMD Ryzen 7 3700U and AMD Ryzen 3780U CPUs are more common in Ryzen 7 based laptops. The former being an energy efficient processor with typical Thermal Design Power of 15W while the latter is high power processor running hot at 35W with a round 14.9% performance gain.

Using an energy efficient cpu also allows the laptop to be slim, measuring only 26mm thin and weighing 2.0kg. But what is most important for it to be classed as a gaming machine is the inclusion of a discrete graphics card, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 3080 with a generous 8GB GDDR6 memory.

6. ACER Nitro 5 15.6-inch AMD Ryzen 7 Gaming Laptop – RX560X, 512GB SSD

For a pro level gaming machine, a strong processor requires a strong graphics card. Unfortunately, the Nitro 5 being a mid-range machine comes with a strong AMD Ryzen 7 3750H processor but is paired with a middling AMD Radeon RX 560X with 4GB GDDR5 graphics.

The laptop is still capable of offering smooth and stable performance even when running some demanding games. 7. HP ENVY x360 15.6 or 13.3-inch AMD Ryzen 7 2-in-1 Laptop, 512GB SSD

While other laptops may have touchscreens, here is a laptop that goes beyond just having a touchscreen but one that supports Stylus input with the stylus included and has 360-degree hinges. The HP Envy x360 2-in-1 convertible laptop come with multi-mode use, tablet being one. It is also light for its size, starting from 1.3kg for the 13.3-inch model and 2.05kg for the 15.6-inch model.

It is able to achieve this by using the energy efficient AMD Ryzen 7 3700U with lower TFP (see table above). As a result, you get amazing battery life even with the bigger 15.6-inch device lasting up to 13 hours per charge. What is missing, is the discrete graphics. The Envy x360s rely on the AMD Radeon RX Vega 10. Still, the laptop is good for the occassional games.

Now, with Ryzen 7 4700U in place of the Ryzen 7 3700U, the powerful and power hungry processor manages up to 8.5 hours battery life on the 15.6-inch model. A small price to pay for extra performance.

A standard HP Pavilion 15 (not gaming and does not come with a discrete graphics) is now available with AMD Ryzen 7 4700U processor. This is a more efficient and powerful chip with embedded Radeon Graphics. It also comes with double the memory at 16GB, 512GB SSD and a convenient 15.6-inch Full HD touchscreen. The laptop is way lighter and slimmer than the gaming equivalent above. Given its affordable price tag, it is also one of the favourites with buyers. Again, with performance means battery life penalty, with up to 7.5 hours on a full charge just about a full day’s work.

It weighs under 2kg at 1.75kg and measures only 17.9mm thin. Like the HP Envy x360, it comes with a touchscreen but unlike the Envy x360, this is strictly a laptop, not a convertible.

9. ACER Swift 3 14-inch AMD Ryzen 7 Laptop – 512 GB SSD

At the budget end of our list is the ACER Swift 3 14-inch with the energy efficient Ryzen 7 3700U processor. Again, this too received the Ryzen 7 4700U upgrade. Also, the laptop now features a spacious storage at 1TB SSD up from 512GB but comes with half the memory at 8GB.

Surprisingly, even with the power hungry CPU, Acer claims up to 11.5 hours of battery life so you can get a full days work without needing charge. It is also lightweight at 1.2kg and measures 15.9mm thin.

Even at its low price point, Acer managed to surprise us with a tough touchscreen display fronted by a sheet of Corning Gorilla Glass. This makes it stronger and able to withstand knocks and bumps of daily life. It also means it won’t scratch easily from day to day use. Lastly, yet another surprise, the slim laptop has a cool metallic frame with sleek all-metal aluminium body, except for the frame around the screen. That’s made of plastic.
