Comparing Apple Watch Series 8 vs Apple Watch Series 9
We take a simple approach comparing the Apple Watch Series 8 and Series 8 watches, focusing on its outlook, features, performance and software improvements.
Same Design but Brighter Display
At first glance, the Apple Watch Series 9 maintains the iconic design language Apple is known for. However, a closer examination reveals subtle enhancements. The Series 9 continues with the same sizes offered in the Series 8, typically 41mm and 45mm, but with a slightly brighter, up to 2000 nits brightness and more energy-efficient display. The always-on retina display of the Series 9 offers better outdoor visibility without a significant impact on battery life.
Then there is the new case colour, Pink aluminium. This is on top of existing colours since Apple Watch Series 8 which are Midnight, Starlight, Silver, Product Red. The colour options for Stainless Steel cases are the same, with Graphite black, Silver and Gold.
Faster Performance but Same Battery Life
Under the hood, the Series 9 comes equipped with a new S9 chip, which promises faster performance compared to the S8 chip in the Series 8. This improvement translates to quicker app launching, smoother animations, and more efficient handling of demanding tasks like fitness tracking and app integration.
New features are made possible with the new silicone such as double tap gesture and on-board Siri. The former lets you operate the watch for the first time without touching the screen. You simply tap your index finger and thumb. The latter lets you access logged information from the health and activity tracker and apps quicker with Siri. It does this without relying on the cloud shaving up to seconds off.
There is also the location awareness chip. The S9 silicone now uses the second generation Ultra Wideband chip offering more precision ‘Find My’ features. The onboard app will track the location of your iPhone and direct you to it with much better accuracy. This Ultra Wideband chip also works with HomePod to let you control music playback there when in proximity.
Battery life has always been a critical factor for smartwatches. The Series 9 aims to maintain the 18-hour battery life standard set by its predecessor, but with more efficient power management. This means that users can expect similar longevity, even with enhanced performance and display features.
Same Sensors but More Health and Fitness Features
Both Series 8 and 9 offer a comprehensive suite of health and fitness tracking features, including heart rate monitoring, ECG, blood oxygen monitoring, and an array of workout options. However, while Series 9 maintains the same sensors, it introduces software enhancements that could offer more detailed insights into your health metrics and fitness progress.

You can see all the metrics you need based on your fitness activity be it running or swimming. These include Heart Rate Zone and customised intervals, all in one view while you work out. If you need more information, scroll down using the Digital Crown to reveal metrics like Segment and Splits, Elevation and Activity rings.
The watch is also capable of logging your state of mind. Use the Mindfulness app to do this. Check out the engaging visuals to see how you are feeling and log your momentary emotion and daily mood. Use the notifications and complications on your watch face to stay calm and collected.
With the new WatchOS, it also integrates better with iPhone. For example, when you start a cycling workout from your watch, it will also show up on the iPhone as a Live Activity. You can then mount the iPhone to your cycling machine or bicycle handle, tap on the Live Activity and this will become the main focus. All your metrics will be on the phone’s big screen while you ride and keep your hands on the handle bar.
Software and Ecosystem
Running on the latest watchOS, the Series 9 offers all the new software features and improvements available in the update. While Series 8 also supports the latest watchOS, the Series 9 may provide a smoother and more responsive user experience due to its upgraded hardware.
Final Thoughts
The Apple Watch Series 9 represents an evolutionary, rather than revolutionary, step forward from the Series 8. For users with older models, the Series 9 offers a compelling upgrade with its enhanced performance, improved display, and new health features. However, for Series 8 owners, the decision is less clear-cut. The improvements, while notable, may not warrant an immediate upgrade unless you demand the latest technology or have specific needs that the new features address.
